Opening report related to data on open form

I am working on a database for a horse stable, and I have a form for each horse, from which I can open various reports relating to that horse, eg the horse's pedigree. I created a query using =Forms!HorseDetailsForm!HorseName in the criteria section under the horse's name, and then open up a pedigree report from that query. It worked perfectly. Twice. Then I backed up the database, and it wouldn't work again. I hunted and hunted for the problem, couldn't find it, so re did it all. Same thing again, it worked, then I saved it, then it wouldn't work again. Does anyone know what's happening. I am using Access 2007 on this computer. I'm hoping maybe on my work computer (Access 2013) it won't do this.

(PS. I'm a beginner and don't know code, so idiot proof relies will be most welcome!)
