Newbie needs help with Option Buttons

Many thanks in advance if anyone reads this and can help. I am a newbie to access and am finding this site a lot more than useful. Can you let me know how to correctly use option buttons so that it records the option chosen and allows me to select different options on the following records and not just keep the first one selected. Hope I make sense. Thanks again.

Thanks, Option Buttons now being selected

Many thanks Pat, What it is to know.. Not sure whether I have done it correct but I am up and running now thanks to your reply. I done as you said and created numeric fields for my option buttons, created my form, put in the option buttons and on the control source put the related field name, I wouldn't know how to do it using the wizard though, how would it know I wanted option buttons?

Why not Select the Option Group object frame and place it on your form? Then you'll see how the wizard works. Since you don't seem to be aware of the wizard (it activates automatically when you place the option group frame on a form), I would say that you may have a problem. You don't create an option group by selecting the little round button. You create a "group" by selecting the Option Group control. Make sure you have only ONE table field for each group of option buttons. So if you have three buttons in one group and they select button 2, 2 will be stored in the table field.

Pat, I have found the Option Group control and have it working as you say. I will experiment with this more tomorrow as it is time for bed here in the UK. The idea behind using the buttons is to enable me to select more than one choice rather like the mutliple list box but having read through this forum there seems to be many reasons for not using multiple list boxes. I need to be able to occasionally select more than one choice as my clients might have more than one need. Would I be able to use the Option Group more than once on one form? Grateful thanks. TP

Becareful when creating your UI. There is an expectation for certain types of controls. When a user sees an option group with radio buttons, he expects to be able to select only ONE choice. And when one is selected, all the others should be de-selected. He may make data entry mistakes if this does not happen. Remember, they are called radio buttons because they mimic the interface of a car radio. When you push a button, the station changes and you can NEVER select more than one station at a time.

When multiple selections are required, your best bet is to do it right and create a separate table to hold the selections. In this case, the easiest interface is a small subform where the selections are listed. Each row would be a combo so that an option can be selected from the combo rather than typed in.

Your knowledge is recognised and much appreciated. I will look at it again tomorrow. Nite Nite
