Hi there,

I’m new here so don’t shoot me if I’m asking something that is inappropriate. I’m looking to make a DB for paper file tracking simular as you would expect in a law firm.

I don’t want to reinvent the wheel so I’m asking if someone has built something like this before. I’m also looking at barcode ID which I have no experience with at all.

Is there someone out there that can put me on the right path?

Cheers,

Renoir

Search the forum for "Barcode" to see some posts on the subject. I'll tell you ahead of time, it is a mixed bag as to how you capture bar codes.

As to a tracking database for any set of documents: Depending on which version of Access you have, when you install it you might be able to use the database wizard to create a particular type of database for tracking things. I don't know that a DOCUMENT tracker is available as such, but you might just be able to find something useful in what is predefined for you.

Since this is "like tracking legal documents" you will probably have some wrinkles that require customization. Don't be surprised if no one comes up with exactly what you want.

I am currently and have played in the past with barcodes... no expert but I have accomplished a few tasks. What I think you need is to establish how to work the database first, then concern yourself about the barcode portion. The barcode portion will just serve as a replacement to typing in the record number (or whatever) on a keyboard.

Cheers,

I found Bill Gates’ “Inventory Tracker” which I will be able to tweak a bit. It has a barcode field associated with the asset (now paper file). Do you know of a reader that can scan the barcode and then download it into the system to update the file location or is this pie in the sky stuff?

Thanks for your assistance to date.
