I have download the AdventureWorks db from this site: http://missingmanuals.com/cds/9780596527600/ . This database is listed under Chapter 9. Using Access 2007 I open the query called OrderedItems and then click on View and then click on PivotTable View. I get the message "Data provider could not be initialized". Can anyone help me correct this?

It's a acc 2007 database with a few tables and queries which startup nicely on my computer.
Perhaps you need to reinstall/repair your office installation.

Thank you. Do you know of any way to repair Access (besides buying a new one)? It's Access 2007. I do not have the disk.

I was suggesting that because it is a strange error message.

Do you have any problem opening another Access database or is it this one specific that you're having problems with?

If you can open a new database without any problem you could try importing all tables and queries from the AdventureWorks database.

Let me know how that works out for u.

I imported the tables and queries to a new database and got the same result. I am also having trouble with creating a crosstab query with the crosstab query wizard. When I select some fields and go to the next screen one of the fields is missing and one I didn't select is there. Also, I've been getting "threats detected" from AVG virus protection.

Seems your computer has some serious issues.
I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but i seems to me that your computer may have caught a bad virus.

First eliminate the threat and then reinstall Office. You may need to format the HD and reinstall the OS from scratch...

How can I install Office without the disks? There are several repair Access websites but I need a recommendation.

I tried system restore. It told me my computer has not been changed. This after trying numerous past dates. But the problem with the pivot table has gone away. Still having a problem with crosstab queries. Why won't system restore work fully?

Perhaps the system restore was infected also or you can't restore far enough to reach a point where the system wasn't corrupted.

Without the disks it will be difficult to reinstall Office. How did you get the installation in the first place? Is it an OEM installation? If so, you might have an installation on the disks which are accompanied with the computer.

The computer is a corporate laptop that I purchased used. I have the Windows XP disk but no Office disk. Do you think Office is on that?

If I reinstall Windows, will it delete My Documents?

First backup everything worth backing up.
Perhaps Office is on the disk also but ofcourse i can't be sure.

If not, your company should have them.
