When the user clicks an item in my custom toolbar, which event does he trigger? How can I capture which item he selected ?

is the only thing you can do with the onaction event to run a global function of that name, or can you do other things?

does this apply to all shortcuts etc. ie can a shortcut attached to a control run code in the forms module, or does it have to run a global function.
