Preventing users from updating records in a split database

Hi.
We have a split database with the back end on an off-site server and each involved staffer has a front end on their desktop.
We are switching databases but need staff to be able to still view records in the 'old' Access 97 database.
How can I allow viewing and searching, but not adding or modifying of records? And can it be done through the back end file, as opposed to modifying each staffer' (located in scattered offices) desktop?

Set the attributes of the BE (Back End) to read only in the standard windows file environment. e.g. Righ Click>Properties>Check read only.

This will allow them to view the data but not alter it
