when i go to open my database from a floppy disk it says 'network or disk error' any help?

already read that, not very computer literate, u care to explain and tell me how 2 fix it if its possible?

what OS are you using?

create a folder in the root of C:

Call it TMP

then do another one and call it TEMP

Then try opening.

Windows XP, so i go into control panel, system, environment variables, create 2 new ones like you said? but i already have 2 variables called TEMP and TMP for i just checked

that's fine.. I wasn't suggesting that you do that. ;)

Since they are already declared (as I thought they would be) I would for you to create two FOLDERS called TMP and TEMP in the root of your C:\ drive.

Declaring the folders in your system variables and having them not exist is causing your error.

i reckon i could do that if i knew what the route of my C drive was? or how 2 get to it

double click on MYCOMPUTER icon.. you should see a bunch of drives listed there..
C:
D: (optional, cd-rom drive maybe)
etc..

double click on the C: drive icon..That is the root of your c: drive ;)

ok jus created two folders in the route of C:\ there. do i need 2 put nefing in them? i tried opening the .mdb again after i created those 2 folders it still wouldnt open, it shows me all my tables, queries etc but it doesnt let me open them?

no, you don't need to put anything in them.

You're not getting the error on opening the db now. But you're having problems viewing tables, queries..

Are these tables linked to another database by chance?

Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

well, isn't that polite of Microsoft to apologize..lol

Are you opening the db with the same or higher version of access?

i created some of it using Access 2000 and some of it using XP, it says in access XP that its a Office 2000 database version?

so long as it says 2000 format in XP then it will be ok to open in 2000.

It sounds like the db is corrupted.

it means that the database was underage and it was taken out for a night on the town.. bars..hookers.. etc.

Probably a bad floppy disk which isn't allowing the db to open properly. There are most likely errors on the disk.

is this the only copy of the database or do you have a backup?

you can try this program

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2463

it may be able to salvage the file.

Make sure in the future that you have backups of your databases. Floppy disks are notoriously prone to failure.

if you have USB capable pc's. you might even want to get one of these.
USB MEMORY STICK

they are more reliable and can hold much more than a floppy disk. Not to mention being much faster. ;)
