Does anyone know why when i have a link excel spreadsheet in my access database i am not able to edit the data?
I have a copy of the database on my laptop and it works fine, i can edit and add data but the office copy which is on the network it will not let me edit the linked spreadsheet in access. I have an update query that updates a field in the linked excel table but it no longer works. I dont think there is any special permissions on the files. It is sooo frustrating... dont know what to do.

Thanks for letting me vent.

check the versions of xls you have on your lap top and the one used to create the xls on the network, also maybe access is not updating the link to the file when you get on the network.
i was blocked via novell security restrictions on a job before so maybe it is a network thing and not the file permissions?

I checked the versions, and they both have 2003 but one has SP2 and the laptop does not have any sp. The one that is not working is the one with 2003 SP2. Why would the SP make the excel link in Access behave that way. More important how can i fix it? I will go to the Knowledge base site and see if i can find out anything but if you find out anything let me know. I am also having the network checked out. will know about that soon hopefully.

thanks

Service Pack 2 changed some settings on the security side of the house. You might recall how Microsoft got (rightfully) excoriated for such crappy security. They did a lot with SP2 but the side effect is that the default is now very tight for the average user.

Unfortunately I don't recall all of the settings that have been tweaked in SP2 - it is a very large number - so you will have to adjust your security. The down side of this is that unless you are familiar with Microsoft Management Consoles you will have a hard time fixing the problem. If your site has a security guru, ask for assistance.
