Problems with shortcuts

Here is a strange problem happening on a couple of machines at my workplace, but not all. I can lauch an application off the network if I go directly to the network folder the application is in and launch it that way. When I create a shortcut, either within the network folder or on the desktop, it gives an error message that it cannot find the application, yet it lauches it anyway. Has anyone ever seen this before?

Have you tried mapping the network drives on the remote machines then pointing the shortcut to the mapped drives as oppose to the network folder? Had similar messages when trying to view drives through network folders "can't find drive" then opens in explorer.... mapped the drives and worked ok then...
