protecting the backend dbase

I have a split database with the backend installed on our companies server. I would like to know if the data in thetables can be encrypted some way so that other folks may not pull the data out of the tables using excel or word to view the data?

I've never done it, but Access 2002 does have an encryption feature built-in. Search the help file for details.
