The Quick Style and Change Shape formatting command buttons greyed out. What setting do I need to change to make them available?

Yes, there are some command buttons on my wife's db that she wants me to add color. I have done it often but all of a sudden they are unavailable.

I just discovered this is a old mdb. Those formatting buttons only work in the accdb.
I tried saving it in the 2002/2013 format but it wouldn't save. I then started a new db an imported the all forms, tables,etc. and I was able to change colors. Of course I don't dare pick colors myself. When I visit her at the rehab hospital tomorrow, we will be sure mamma is happy.
