relationship help

Hi Guys,

Could anyone offer me some assistance with relationships between tables please?,

Apologies if this is a stupid question but I have a job number (4 digit number) which is currently set to auto number in table 1(container) I need this number to automatically update throughout the other tables as soon as it is entered.

is this possible or are their any work around's ??

Lots of things:

1. numbers have as many digits as they need, no more no less. Explain why you think your autonumber has a four digits and will continute to have just 4 digits?

2. Updating means changing of data. If a job number is just created in one table, what data is there to update in the other tables? How does data exist for a job number that literally nanoseconds ago was created?

3. If this is an autonumber, this job number won't be entered, it will be assigned. Is it truly an autonumber, or is it a field you are entering?

4. Provide us with sample data from what you have and what you would like.

First off thanks for the quick reply.

1, my auto number is currently four digits (0000;00000;"Null") and will increase to five soon (In our old database we allocated product enquiry numbers by starting on 1000 and then every enquiry after that would be given a number 1001, 1002 e.t.c) we are now on 9000ish and when my database goes live it will be expected to carry on simply giving this number which will then be the number that sticks with the project all the way through.

2, The number just needs to be copied into several tables to a field which is Product enquiry number. I though the way to do this would be to maybe use an update query however your answer suggests I may be going about this the wrong way.

3, I think I answer this in the previous responses.

It sounds like you are entering data directly into tables, which I would advise against. It sounds like you need a sort of form/sub-form system to help you properly enter data. What you are suggesting is that essentially empty rows (only piece of data is project number) of data be created in your tables. Why does that need to occur?

Can you explain your data a little better, what each table contains and its relationship to the table that creates the project numbers.
