Good day,

An application was created using A2002 then converted to A97. This converted version has been in use for 5 months and it now contains more than 6000 records. Many modifications have been made to original. I now want the users to use new version.

My problem is twofold: Firstly, when original developer sent 1st version, it was not noticed that numbering of records started at 8 in autonumber field. Secondly, during users' migration to A2002 a few months later, all records were lost, then recovered but a gap of 4400 records was created, i.e. records start at 8 then go to say, 5800, then skip to 9200 and continue onwards to more than 10000.

My problem occurs when I import their data into my new version. Autonumber field becomes number field. When I add a new Inquiry ID field and put it back to autonumber, numbering is reset to 1. I think I can sort this problem through an append query (although I'm struggling), I don't have a clue as to how I will make numbering skip 4400 numbers to maintain original inquiry id numbers.

P.S. I've tried exporting the table from their version to mine but this disables all the queries, reports and command boxes. What a quagmire...Would appreciate your thoughts...Thank you!

Welcome to the pain of finding out that using Autonumber as a primary key or id generator is totally flawed.

Autonumber only guarantees a unique number, it doesn't guarantee that you will get or keep the numbers in a consecutive order (as you just found out).

I don't envy you a bit as your task ahead is daunting, if not almost impossible.

Thank you Bob and Pat! I was afraid I was going to find out how difficult it would be. I will try your suggestion, Mr. H.. If I'm successful, I'll let you know. Bye for now!
