How do you handle Replacement item in inventory?

Let me explain in details of what i mean. You have a part number that is currently scrap. that part can be re machine into different part number. I am thinking of adding new line with the new part number and delete the old part one. The problem with this approach is I lose traceability. Another approach is to change the old inventory entry into the new part number and record the old part Number somehow. I have some idea of the concept but I can't really grasp it yet. any recommendation or Suggestion would be highly appreciated.

can you do inventory adjustments?

i would definitley create a new part no - since thats what it is, really

just do a negative adjustment on the old part no, and a positive adjustment on the new one

adding is not a problem, the problem is the old part have to be send out and then received again. then i need to trace to see what part number it came from.
the tracebility is the hardest one. source of inflow can be either a purchase order or work order. the problem that i face is each item in the inventory is a serialize item meaning unique

do you really need to trace that a part A has been machined into a part B?

accounting wise, i can't think that any benefit would be obtained from being able to trace this. But if you really need to, then is it any different from any other workflow to take raw materials and change them into some other finished stock? If you do that as your normal business, then the same process will work. If you dont then why bother with this one exception

surely all you need to record is that you have just scrapped a part A (explanation remachined), and received a part B (explanation remachined).
