Replication/Synchronization Question

I had a design master and 4 replicas. I was able to synchronize the 4 replicas with no problems but when I went to synch with the design master it failed. So I deleted it thinking I could take one of the existing replicas and promote it to the design master. After I do that would I create another replica to replace the one that I promoted to the design master? Or instead, should I create another replica from an existing replica (can I do this?) and then promote the new replica to the design master? I hope I was able to explain my problem clearly. I would appreciate anyone's help. I just can't seem to get this process to work smoothly. Does anyone know of any books that focus on this process (replication and sychronization)? Thanks Again!

I dont think theres anyway back to a Master form a Replica.

Hope you can Recover / Backup?

Maybe try some of the free recovery programs on one of the download sites to be able to recover files deleted from the Recycle Bin

Your thingking is correct. You can create a replica from another replica as long as it is a full, i.e. not a partial, replica. So create your replica and then make one of them the design master. If you need further help let me know.
Hope this helps.

Keith,

Thank you for your feedback. Just one (more) question...
I tried creating a replica from a replica but it just hung there
and the task manager said 'not responding'. I tried this
many times and the same thing would happen. It seems to
only happen when I do this process on the network.
When I try to synch the replica on the network with the design master on the network it also just hangs there and doesn't respond. I have no problems syncing the network replica with a laptop replica. I've done this before and it has worked but not any more! This is why I must create a new replica. Any ideas why? Again I appreciate your responding to my initial question.

Hi Cassandra
My suspicion would be a network permissions problem. Check that you have write permissions to the appropriate folder on the server and vice versa.

If I didn't have write permissions, wouldn't I not been able to sync the network replica copy with the laptop replica? Or is that different from synching the network design master with a network replica? I'm not too educated in networks... as you can tell! Thanks.

Back to the 1st question:
I could take one of the existing replicas and promote it to the design master.
From Access2k2 Help:

You can recover a Design Master if the file has been lost, damaged, or moved. However, this option is unavailable if the currently opened replica is a partial replica or if the Design Master is moved with a tool other than Replication Manager.

Make sure that there is no Design Master in the replica set.
Open the replica that you want to make the new Design Master.
On the Tools menu, point to Replication, and then click Synchronize Now.
Click a replica in the list, and then click OK.
Repeat steps 2 through 4 as many times as necessary to synchronize with each remaining replica in the replica set.
Important Make sure that you synchronize with all other replicas in the replica set.

On the Tools menu, point to Replication, and then click Recover Design Master.
Click Yes.

The replicas are not partial. The Design Master was deleted (not moved) by right clicking and deleting so does that mean your option is unavailable to me? If no, at the end of your instructions, I'll need to create a new replica to replace the one that I promoted to the design master - right? Thanks, pcEars.

Hi Cassandra
Each computer that syncs with another must have write permissions. If you can sync two, e.g. your network (I assume design master) and the laptop, but not your network an another, then it suggests to me that the permissions on the another computer will not allow it to be updated.

If it used to work but doesn't now check if settings have changed, e.g. permissions or anti-virus firewall installed etc.

Keith
