Report to look like a spreadsheet list

Can anyone help? A student of mine has done a database for coursework giving option choices of subjects. The staff member in charge wants to see an output format which will give the student names and year groups at the left and the subject names at the top, with the student choices marked (as a sort of tally).

The original database can provide reports per subject, per student but not an overview.

Any ideas - I think a pivot table might be one way but I am not proficient at these? I can supply a copy of the db is necessary.

Try a crosstab query first
