return empty field

I am perfroming a multiple criteria search that sometimes does not return the criteria searched for. For one of my criteria in my query, i am using

IIf(IsNull([Forms]![Form3]![text1]),[Thesis_Title],IIf(InStr([Thesis_Title],[Forms]![Form3]![text1])>0,[Thesis_Title]))

When i search for a set of data that has no value in this field, i get nothing back. Im having a hard time with this one.

If I'm reading this correctly, I'm surprised you're not receiving a 'wrong number of arguments' error message.

In the nested iif() statement, there appears to be no option if:
InStr([Thesis_Title],[Forms]![Form3]![text1])<=0
