can you get automatic ruler lines to display on a report after each record is displayed?

If you mean a line dividing each record. You can insert that yourself in design view.

yeah thats what i mean, would like horizontal & vertical lines dividing each record & field headings, is there not an easier way of doing it other than manually inserting lines?

er, no. It'll take about 2 mins to do in the detail section of the report design.
