I am building a database application using Access 97 and need to make a run-time version of it, but I don't have access to the office developer software. Is there another way of creating a run-time version that does not require the developer softeware?

The reason you need the Developer Software is for the licence which allows you to distribute run-time versions of Microsoft Access. There are other package and deployment applications which give you much more flexibility and control than the Developer PDW but you still need a copy for the licence.

Thanks, but where do I get a copy of the software???

I've looked everywhere but nobody I can find actually sells 97 anymore.

Can you buy an ad-hoc licence from Microsoft or alternatively, does buying a current version automatically cover you for deploying previous versions as well?

The second one, deploy previous version.

But you have to get your hands on the actual Acc97 Developer's Toolkit. I had to do this about 18 months ago. We ordered and paid for an Acc2K Developers Toolkit but actually used a old copy of the Acc97 toolkit that someone had lying around.

At that time, I was not able to get any useful info from the Microsoft site about how to acquire the Acc97 media.

Good luck.

Do I actually need the software though? DBL (above) appears to be saying that I can produce the run-time version with other software and that I only need a licence from Microsoft to distribute Access applications.

If this is the case and I buy the XP version, presumably that will also cover me for deploying applications in Access 97 (run-time created with some other form of software).

Have I understood this correctly?

Hmmm, now you've got me wondering! You'd need to take the run-time files from the XP version because I can't see how you would get them from anywhere else. Maybe you need to package it in XP and then deploy it using another method? I run Developer 2000 and am too mean to pay for another deployment package so I put up with the little foibles that it throws my way!

This is what I remember from 18 months ago.

1) If you install the Acc97 Developers Toolkit (it may be called the Office 97 Dev Toolkit) on your desktop it will install a shortcut that creates "runtime" install packages.

2) If you select the "network" install option and direct the wizard to install it on a network drive, then it will create a folder on a network drive with:
your application,
MSACCESS.EXE,
and a bunch of DLLs, OLBs, etc

3) You create a shortcut to launch your application from the network drive. Any user can copy the shortcut to their desktop and launch the application without having Acc97 installed on their desktop. **but ** Acc97 must be registered on the user's desktop.

HTH,

Normally, it wouldn't make any difference, but the application I am building is a data collection application comprising of client software (run-time) that generates a file output which they submit and a central database (full Access version) that imports and consolidates those files from around 100 clients.

The problem is that the firm I am doing this for requires both applications to be in Access 97 as they are not planning on upgrading to XP until middle of next year.

However, from what has been said above it looks like I will have to go the XP route anyway as Microsoft are, as usual, being very unhelpful and nobody else seems to have a solution!

Paul,

This sounds like a dumb idea but it might work.

Ebay !!

Advertise for an Access/Office 97 Developers Toolkit.

Somebody will probably sell you a used copy.

It's probably legal but I am not a lawer.

This is in reference to Pat hartman's post. I have Office XP Dev Ed. Now the question is, Access runtime files I create with XP Dev. can these be used on any version of windows? For example can runtime files created with Office XP dev, be installed on Win95 machines?

well i just got my hands on ODE97 from ebay... I can't wait to try it out. If someone wants me to test an ODEXP created app on a windows98 machine... i'll do it. But I dont need it for my own research.

Just out of interest, if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it?

400 us dollars off Ebay. And then 2 weeks later $350 for ODE97.

I think I broke the bank... Hopefully it's worth it! BTW can I ask help for ODE97, if I need it? Or is it ok to post topics on ODE or is there a better board for that?

Wow, I thought these things were supposed to get cheaper now that they're out of date.

Is the copy you bought unused, boxed and packaged?
