Salary and paid period for payroll

1) In a table Ref_Calendar. What is day_number?
2) In Employee_Pay, why there is a pay_period_id? How those relationships relate?

"pay_period_id' is used to identify the actual date related to a record in the Employee_Pay table.

Ref_Calendar.day_number is probably a sequential number representing the number of days from some beginning date such as the 1st day of the year so as to faciliate some action taken periodically (days since last pay day). One would have to look at the actual data to decifer that field, without more informaton.
