Hi there people,

I am trying to design a school fee management database, i was wondering if any of you gurus have done anything similar. The main problem i am having is the class (do i maintain a separate table or what?).

Any help would be appreciated

Bert.

Hi, Bert.

So many databases are similar, even tho the information they track can be very different. If you'd like some help, why don't you just tell us what you're doing? I, for one, have no idea what you mean by a school fee management system, unless you're talking about tuition? Or...? (or am I being lame-brained! hee hee)

Fee Management

Sorry Dreamboat for not being more specific - Actually i have been asked to design a database for a school - The requirement is for the fee (entering fee information - Tracking defaulters etc.).

Best Regards,

Bert.

Okay, I'm going to ask you to be even more specific. Please list all the things you'll be tracking, and all the information about those things...students, classes, instructors, fees, classrooms...last names, first names, what? And then we'll tell you what tables to put what into...

Fee Management

Ok Here Goes:

I want to track student information - Name, Father's Name, Address, Class etc. Then the fee paid history also needs to be tracked for each month - The student can be promoted to a higher class or repeat the same class in either case the student will start paying fees from month 1 (a new set for a new year).

The administration might also decide to waive off fees for a certain month of a certain student.

Basically it's just an alternative to the Registers they are using and the time the parents have to wait while the clerk searches for the students records.

hope you get the picture

Bert.

Bert, I think the problem here is that you are asking too much within one question. Obviously we don't know how School Fees work and asking for help on designing the database is such a broad topic that it is too hard to answer.

Consider trying out a table structure on your own first, getting all the fields you need and then post back with what you have. Once that's done, you can probably expect to get better answers. It would also make the question of design more imagnable than it currently is.
