Hello folks.

A quick question if I may. I'm not sure if this is an Access issue or a general windows one, but here goes.

I have a library access Database. One of the search methods is by Barcode. A form pops up upon request and the barcode of the book is scanned in. As soon as this is done, the search is immediately activated and the system faithfully returns all the books with the same barcode value. The event is set to 'After Update'. Works well.

However, when I set the same database up on another (older) machine everything works in the same way, except that the user has to press a key (enter) to activate the search, after the scanner has done its work.

Although I did not (consciously at least) set the original database installation to do this, it is has proved to be much more efficient than the user having to scan the book as well as press a key.

Any ideas as to how I can set this second installation to run as soon as the scanned data has been entered.

FYI, the newer PC, I have noticed, also behaves in the same way, if data is scanned into an internet site. As soon as the data appears in the search box, the search is instigated without the need to press enter.

This is why I'm unsure if this is an Access issue or not.

Any suggestions?

Thanks folks.

Rob

I suggest comparing the Client Settings in the of the Options of the two system (Click FILE, Options, Client Settings). They vary by system and don't follow the database. Maybe the Move after entry or Behavior entering field setting is having an effect on this.

Thanks Steve, I'll certainly check this out tomorrow.

it could also be the individual barcode scanner setup - they can be set to "send" an enter or tab equivalent key press code after scanning is complete.

It's normally set by a set of control barcodes being scanned in from the set up instructions.

Thanks Minty. I had thought of that, however, I purchased a new scanner, same make and model as the other one, and it is simply plug and play. There is no setup involved. It's a simple USB connection. However, I will try swapping the scanners around to see if the original scanner takes the capability with it to the other PC.

I'll also have a look at the 'devices' in each PC with the scanners attached to see if there is something that I can change there.

Thanks for the suggestion

I accessed the scanner website and lo and behold, there was a support section that dealt with exactly my question (amongst others of course). Anyway, as Minty suggested, you have to download a single page document which contains three barcodes. You have t scan each one in succession and after the third scan, a double bleep is heard. Now the scanner 'enters' after scanning.

I'm very pleased, but I think it would be helpful if they included this information in the box.

Thanks again to Minty and Steve for their suggestions.
