Searching

I have a form with a subform. I want to be able to search for a record in the subform's table and display the corresponding record in the main form. I've read where other people have asked similar questions, but they were advised to use a query or a filter. I don't want to use either. I'd like it to work like the find button does. Does anyone know how? Thanks!
