sending email without using outlook

we have an access db that has an automated emailer that uses outlook. With the 2002 outlook and the secuirty work around that we have used it has become slow and clunky. It does work but not very well. Can anybody outline the basics of emailing without using outlook as the server. What servers are there suited to this job?

the link will open up your default mail client
