Set Reference to another Access Database

Question:

I have an Access 97 Front_End datasbe that I'm trying add a reference to another database with. It works fine when both db's are the same format, example both Access 97.

Is it possible to set a reference to another database version, i.e., A2k?

To my knowledge A97 will not read an A2000 database.

A2000 will allow you to open an A97, but will allow the users
to "convert" it, resulting in potentially many cloned databases
and possible lost work.
