something weird with a sub subform

I have a form called frm_ppi with a button to open subfrm_calendar. It works great.... But if I putt ppi as a subform of another form then the button opens the from but shows no data. Is this something normal? I just noticed it today and thought one of my tables had lost everything. I can open subfrm_calendar alone and it's fine... as a subform from frm_ppi and it's fine but running the button to open the subform from a subform and it's blank. Weird. If it makes a difference I'm putting frm_ppi as a page on a tab control on a larger form.

The master form may not have a record with sub records upon open.
The master form may open filtered.
The master form may not have a key when it opens.

It should work if you move to another record, or open to a direct record.
