I have a bound form with a bound subform which is in continuous or datasheet view. I have been experiencing a strange problem of late. After i complete the first record of the subform and then move on to the second record , sometimes i get strange messages like :-

1) The Microsoft Jet Database Engine Stopped the process because you and another user are attempting to change the data at the same time.

2) Invalid Argument

3) Unrecognised database format c:\windows\temp\jet(something).tmp

4) Not a valid bookmark

These errors once they appear wont go away even if you try to ignore them. they just keep coming and each of the columns has an "#error# written in it. you have to close the module and start again. Whats more if you enter exactly the same data again, they do not show up again i.e. random errors. and it happens only when you complete the first record.

To clarify, these errors appear even in a single user environment. i do not change the recordsource or link fields properties at run time for the subform or mainform.

is there anything i have overlooked in form design / code ? Please help me out.

Re: Invalid Bookmark

I have had this problem of invalid bookmark with Access 2000 and Access 2003. It is an error in Access which did not occur in Access 97.

It happens on a subform when you add records on the subform. It allows you to add records the first time you do it, but after you save and try to add another record on the subform, it gives you the invalid bookmark error.

Strangely enough it saves the record on the underlying table on the subform, but deletes it when you move out of the record. The only work around I have found is that you close the man form and re-enter it. This seems to release the subform.

Requerying or closing and opening the subform does not work, you have to close the main form.

I think Microsoft have messed up in 2000 and 2003 and since it affects so few people they have not bothered to solve the problem. I have tried the same code and form in Access 97 and did not have the problem. I did not use bookmarks in any of the forms, so do not give bookmark suggestions.

I would be grateful if someone could solve this problem.

Name Auto-Correct has been guilty of causing all sorts of weird problems. Tools>Options>General tab and turn it off and turn on Compact on Close while you are there. http://allenbrowne.com/bug-03.html

Hi, ruralguy
I had checked out those two options but to no avail.

Sorry, i forgot to mention i am using Access 2K2

If the mdb were mine I would probably go through all of these suggestions from Allen Browne to eliminate corruption as a source of the problem.

Thanks. I will try out this tip.

"In your subforms, include a text box for each field in its LinkChildFields property. This simple step avoids frequent but intermittent crashes of Access 2002 and 2003 ("... shut down by Windows..."). The text boxes can be hidden if you do not wish to see the foreign key fields. "
