Dear all
Over the past couple of weeks, Access has been acting very strangely, and I'm at a loss as to what do about the problems. I'll number the problems, and if anyone can shed any light on any of them, I'd be grateful.
My scenario is this - I have a database which is used in three Areas. They are essentially identical, except for the data. Any changes I make, I have to do on each version. I am using Access 97 and the versions are split into back ends and front ends.
1. The first thing that I noticed was that on existing versions of the database, fields which were autonumbers and were indexed, but no duplicates, suddenly became indexed, duplicates ok.
2. In the Relationships window, all relationships had disappeared. I tried 'show all relationships' but nothing appeared. At first this wasn't a problem, but then all of a sudden, my queries no longer worked. I had made the exact same changes to all versions of the db, and this problem occurred on 2 of the 3.
3. When rebuilding the relationships, more oddities occurred. Even though my id fields were indexed, no duplicates, when I tried to link one table to another, I got various messages. Either that I had duplicate values (I went to check the tables and found I hadn't), went back to the relationships window and tried to build the link again, and lo and behold, this time it worked. OR, it said that one field was not indexed - it was. Same thing happened, went back to check, came back, re-did the relationship and it worked. I just got a new message saying that I couldn't create a join as the field types were different. Checked (knowing that they were the same, and that there had been no changes made, and that it worked before), went back, rejoined, and it worked.
4. Whatever changes I made to the database in both design and data weren't being saved.
5. I thought that it would be a good idea to repair and compact. As soon as I did this, I lost the relationships again.
So far today, so good. I have redone all that I had previously done to one version, and all so far seems to be ok. But I am still having problems with another Area version. What should I do? Is it a problem with the db's or is Access in need of being reinstalled or something? I am somewhat stumped, so if anybody has any idea as to what is going on, please let me know. I have wasted far too much time redoing various things, and unsurprinsingly, am getting rather annoyed.
