Might be interesting to those who will believe anything where people say that "studies prove"...
 
It is a truly sad side-effect of the "publish or perish" mind-set in many colleges and universities - and some private institutions that are research oriented that you have to do darned near anything - including things of questionable veracity - to push out publications. I have gone through the publication process with my major professor and it took us two formal protests and a trip back to the lab for extra experiments to finally get our work published. But there was a professor at our university who was noted for fast turn-around on his publications. Most of his work was good - but he was cut-throat in jumping someone else's pet project with a sneaky phone call to "pump" some young grad student for information.

The article does indicate that the images that were the center of contention were probably not altered directly by the President of Stanford University, but they were done on his watch in various publications and in that context, he would have been responsible for the breach of propriety and protocol in each case. So for him, negligence would have been the issue.
