SubForm not seen as an open form ???

When trying to specify (in a macro) a control from a subform on a open form, the macro errors saying that it cant find the control. If I open the subform alone and run the macro it works fine. How do I get the macro to see the subform so I can specify a control in it for a condition in the macro?
Any help would be great.
