please could someone advise on how to get subscript and superscript to be recongnised in tables.

Simple answer; you can't.

What is it you are wanting to do? (A more detailed description might give us some idea of how else to achieve this).

reclusive is right. The reason is simple. Access is not a word processor. Subscripting and superscripting (as a visual thing) is a word-processing function. Access does not do word-processing on its text boxes.

Subscript in text box label

I need to have a subscript in the label of a text box. This is merely for appearance purposes and will not be put into a table. Is this possible?

Yes but it is ugly.

Make TWO labels. Let's say you wanted X-squared (i.e. a 2 superscript).

Build a label box with the X normal size. Carefully trim the size of the label box via drag-n-drop so it ends just at the end of the string you want superscripted. Build a free-standing label box with a smaller font and the "2" (or the "real" subscript) and drag-n-drop it UP a couple of clicks. (Technically, a couple of twips, 'cause that's the unit in question most of the time.) Be sure that you DON'T have borders on either box.
