Tabbed Form Question

Umm, sorry to bear bad news but you zipped the SHORTCUT to the file and not the file itself :). You will need to zip and upload the actual file and not the shortcut.

Sorry! I just did it correctly and it was too big for this site. I will create a copy of it and delete some forms and tables to try and make it smaller.

OK. Here is a very abridged version. I was able to keep the tables and forms I have issues with though. Let me know if you have a problem opening this. Thanks.

As it is 2007, I'll have to wait now until I get home from work (we don't have 2007 here).

No problem at all. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks again.

Hey there,

Did you have a chance to take a look at my db by any chance? Hopefully you weren't completely horrified...

Hey there,

I have to apologize. I couldn't remember which post I was supposed to look at :o so I didn't. I'll email myself a copy of the link to this post so I can find it again tonight. My humble apologies for not doing this earlier.

No problem. Thanks for your help.
I've emailed myself a link to this thread so I should be able to do it tonight (barring any unforseen circumstance - like getting hit by a bus, etc. :D )

Yeah, let's hope that doesn't happen. I need to get this project done, you know... ;) Thanks again.

That reminded me of a quote by the character shown in my avatar (Rimmer from the BBC Series Red Dwarf).

In one episode he says something to the effect of "well at least he (meaning Kryten the android) knows he is going. For most of us all we get is 'mind that bus, what bus, splat!'"

One of my favorite lines from that series :)

Funny! I have never heard of that series. I assumed your picture was you!!

Okay, let's start with your main form. You do not include all three tables in the record source. You would have a separate form for the All Customers and then the Main form would be the Current Customers and the SUBFORM on the Incidents tab would be the Incidents table.

And your links are not correct. The incidents should be linked to the Current Customers table (I am not sure I like the naming as it sounds more denormalized than it really is).

See the relationships in the attached revised sample. Also, I did some revisions to the form to show what I mean. You would still need to fix several things on them (for one I missed a couple of fields in getting the Incidents subform going).

I'll leave you to pretty it up and resize things to fit and all of that. But this should at least get you on the right track (hopefully).

By the way, I had to get rid of the graphic in the forms to make it small enough to upload again. I figured you could add it in again when you needed.

Thank you so much for doing this (and for not getting hit by a bus!)... I will make the appropriate changes. I totally see now what I was doing wrong with the links. The thought of the subform didn't even occur to me. I plan to fix it up, but then is there a way I can import this into my db, or should I just re-do everything you've done in my existing db?

Thanks again!!!

It would probably be a good exercise to have you go through and make the changes manually but you could import things in. Make sure AutoName Correct is turned off and then delete the old form(s) named the same and then import that and the new subreports. You will need to go fix the relationships too.

I actually did just that. Everything looks great, but I still can't see the incidents associated with the specific customer when I click on the incidents tab (I actually can't see any incidents at all, even in the one you sent me, even though there is data in the incidents table). When I add a new incident, am I supposed to add in the customer's ID from All Customers manually so it will know that is who I am talking about? Should I add that ID field to each form? What am I missing?

Thank you again. I am sure by now you are wishing I would just go away!! But you know too much at this point...;)

You would use a combo box to select the customer (the bound column of the combo is the ID field) for the Incident.

I'm not 100% convinced we have the exact design right yet though. I don't know enough about your business rules and all to figure it out. I made a lot of assumptions based on what you have, but those assumptions might not be valid or work in the context of what you need.

Perhaps a really thorough explanation of what it is you are trying to track and how you will be using it will work. In fact, it might be a good exercise to post the design question in the Theory and Design category here so that we can get some of the better folk involved in that. I'm not the best at design work (my brain starts to hurt after thinking too much about it :D )

OK. Let me explain it to you first and then I'll take it to the other forum because you are familiar with this so far.

I want all of the information about our current producers to be located in one place, a tabbed Current Producers Form. In that form, I want the user to be able to view the contact info, show info, incident info and/or notes about that particular customer. Ideally, I want the user to pull up a customer in the General info tab, and when he or she clicks the incidents tab (for example), I want the user to be able to see the incidents associated with that particular customer. But I don't think this tabbing thing is working out. I should probably just have a Current Contact info form that includes show info and an incident form that includes the contact info that is in the all customers table. It seems like it might be easier. Then I can just create a combo box and have it be bound to the main ID so in the incidents form the user can just choose the correct customer by name.

I just really liked the tab idea... Grrrr.... But if it means I will get this done sooner, then I am willing to go that route at this point.

Okay, list of questions -

1. What is a producer?

2. What is a customer?

3. What relationship (don't think Access relationship, but just in general terms) does a producer have with a customer?

4. What is a show?

5. What does a customer have to do with a show?

6. Is this television broadcast? Radio? what?

7. What is an Incident?

8. What causes an Incident?

Can you see where I'm going with all of this? We need to dig into your business at a very low level and see what is what, get definitions and all before we try to go into the bigger picture. We need to identify the entities, how they interact with each other and what their attributes are.
