I have a database which has an on load event on a form capturing user log in id in a table. Lately, this tables keeps giving me an error as the auto numbering keeps reverting to an existing number. As this is not part of any relationship, it was a relatively easier for me to recreate a brand new table and add records to that to fix the issue. But I am little intrigued as to why should this happen. The database is accessed through network drive as well through Citrix and it is split. insights.

The most common cause is Inserting records using a query that includes a value in the Autonumber field such as restoring deleted records from a backup. This causes the autonumber seed to revert to the inserted record.

I am not a big fan of autonumber because it can bring the database down when things go wrong with it. There are more reliable alternatives.

Thanks. I merely appended the data fields in the new table as I could have auto numbers renumbered in the new table.
