I'm going to be teaching an accounting principles course at a local university this fall. One of the projects I am required to assign has the students entering debits and credits for various transactions. This submission is done on paper. I'd like to create a database that allows the students to enter debits and credits on a form. The form would have features such as sums to verify balanced entries. If possible, I'd like to have a couple hundred transactions from which questions would be randomly selected for their projects, with prebuilt correct answers in the background against which their entries are compared for correctness. Reports would include the errors and type by student and group, etc.
I have only gotten as far as building a form for the students to enter their answers. It consists of a LOT of invisible controls. On the left, the student would select a radio button for either debit or credit. Then, two appropriate controls would become visible for the account and amount. The student would have the option of entering another debit or credit, or submit the answer. I have allowed for up to six total debits and credits, which requires 30 invisible controls on the form and scads of code. Each individual line requires the radio button and two controls if it is a debit and two other controls if it is a credit (indented).
Ultimately, I'd like to have on-screen output that replicates the look of T-accounts and allows the student to go through a month-end close process. I am never going to get this done in time and was wondering if anyone had any shortcut ideas, or if there was already a db in existence that fits this purpose.
Thanks for any help!!
