Good Day All,

I am using the sample Northwind Database and referring to the creation of an order, the section dealing with the creation of a new order number.

Can anyone explain the following function of one of the controls : =Replace("Order #|","|",Nz([Order ID]," (New)"))

Particularly what is "|" about; it can't even be found on the keyboard

The | character is know as the pipe character and is frequently used as a delimiter when splitting things out of strings, as it is virtually never used in normal text. On a UK keyboard it is found above \ on the bottom left of the keyboard.

The function is using the pipe to either identify where to put either an existing order number or the work (New) into the display.

The pipe can generally be found with Shift and the \ key

On a UK keyboard, bottom row, far left of the 'normal' alpha keys

Weird. I was able to forgive the wrong side of the road driving, overlook your incorrect pronunciation of aluminum, but this is a bridge to far. The \ belongs underneath the backspace key and above the Enter key on the right side of the keyboard like god intended.

The pipe and the slash are on the same key here though--at least we agree on that. How come your keyboards are laid out differently than US ones?

Because we have superior fingers....

;)

Try using a French keyboard, they have AZERTY not QWERTY.
That takes some getting used to. :D

As for wrong side of the road, next time you watch a western, have a look at which side the driver sits?, on the right, with the shotgun on the left.?
