I have a continuous form that has a unit field and a price field. There is another field that calculates the unit quantity times the unit cost.. Is there a way to check the value of a calculated field before a you enter a record and then check to see if that value changed before the record is updated?

Thanks
Gregg

It is generally not recommended to store calculated values in your tables (there are a few exceptions, but it does not sound like yours is one of those exceptions). You would just do the calculation on the fly in your queries, forms and reports.

I agree with jzwp22 about this. This is something you should not attempt to do until you have Access 2010 and have data macros available to you. Access currently does not have triggers and you can't even be sure about the After Update events firing on the form if the data changes via code. So, best to not store the calculations.

Yeah, I know its not preffered but it is what was requested of me to do. I didn't think there was a way to do it the way access is now. Its good to see that this may be possible in 2010. I need to do some research on the new features. I wasn't aware there was documentation available yet. Thanks for all the information and taking the time to help out.

Not a reliable way anyway.

2010 will change the way a lot of people do things and it will take some of us older users a bit of getting used to.

There isn't a lot of documentation there but I've seen it, played with it and am currently testing it. So, I do have a bit of knowledge about it. There are some things we can share and some we can't. Right now, the data macros are one of the things we can talk about.

Understood. When you said something about data macros I did a quick google search and found a site that had a you tube video showing how it worked. Its great to see a feature like this is being added. I have'nt really done any research yet of the possible upgrades on 2010 however I think it may be time to start. Thanks again for all the great info.
