#trouble with linked tables

hi, i have 2 acess databases on 2 different machines on a net work. the two programmes both have linked tables to another access database on one of the machines. If both the front end programs are open at the same time there both open as "read only recordsets" .

My idea was to have both the front end programes open and to be able to edit the same shared linked data, at the same time. ????

Can access not do this ?

there are 3 machines,

1 desktop
laptop 1
laptop 2

there is not "server" just a wireless hub.

on laptop 1 is a front end program (with linked tables to back end program) and the the back end tables only ptogram.
on laptop 2 is a seperate front end program with linked tables to the back end on laptop 1.

if i only open 1 front end at a time i can read/write, if i open 2 at a time it open read only on both programs ??

can you avdvice at all, thankyou.

The other test you should do, go to each desktop machine, navigate to the location of the back end database, once there, create a simple text file, save it, open it, add some text and close it. If you can do this, then that proves you have read write capabilities to the back end data. If you can’t do this, then it is probably the cause of your problem.

I have managed to set up 2 databases as 2 seperate front ends, and 1 back end access database with the tables only (using linked tables for the 2 front end programs).

But when I try to do the same across a network i get a read/write problem, ie the front end programs open "read only record set" I have the back end program and 1 front end program on one computer and the other front end progam on the other computer.

The back end program is saved on the Public drive on the first computer and the two front end progams are saved in the documents folder of each of the 2 computers respectively.

Can anyone help with this ? Is is a security problem ? or becuase it is across a network? the network is just a wirless internet hub that the two computers use.

Access don't work on Wireless systems, must be hard wired....

Slight clarification to that statement is needed. Access works on those, but it is very unwise to do so as it increases the risk of corruption by a very large margin. Access is susceptible to network disruptions and wireless networks are not stable in that area, so you have a high risk of a network disruption and, if that happens while a user is connected, it is likely going to cause corruption of the frontend and very possibly the backend data. So it is VERY STRONGLY recommended that you do not attempt to use Access on a wireless network and that is why Tony said that the way he did. I just wanted to be clear in the reason WHY it should be on a wired network.
