Good afternoon everyone, I am a little confused here and hope you all can shed some light on this...
I have my internet cable going from my wall to a router. Pictures below.
The router itself is plugged into an APC battery backup. I can unplug the battery from the wall and maintain service without a hiccup.

However, if I lose power, the internet service is gone...even when my standby generator kicks in 3 seconds after loss of power.

Only thing I think of is the service needs external power for delivery to my house so the battery and generator are of no use.

Anyway, does anyone have a better understanding on how this works?

Your assent seems correct. As a fallback option when the internet connection dies, see if you can use your smartphone as a an internet "hotspot". That assumes the cellular tower still has power.

That is what we do. Both me and Missy (wife) work from home and my Hotspot is able to keep both of us zipping along...pleasantly surprised.
I was hoping there was something out there that would do what I wanted.

Just watch what you do with the cell hotspot unless you have unlimited data from your cell provider- can quickly use up your allowance as I found to my cost when I moved a while ago. Had to sign up to an unlimited contract for 2 years even tho’ I only needed it for a couple of months ☹️

Usually there is a relay box where the ISP's main cable feed hits a neighborhood distribution spot. If that is close to your house, then it might lose power when you do. Each distribution box has its own sub-net router, probably IPv6, that would also need power, so that might be your culprit. Otherwise, I don't know because we've been on restricted power before and still had service until the battery went south on us.

Luckily for us, we are month to month and can cancel at anytime. We travel a lot so we actually use it more than we had originally anticipated

That bears my theory out so we will go with that!

My local AT&T box is actually across the street, visible out the window from my computer work area, so I know if the block loses power, my network is done for a while.

A Starlink Satellite Dish - You probably need to run it off your generator, unless you can provide it with DC at the correct voltage. I have no idea what the correct DC voltage is, but I know that this is working in the Ukraine, so there must be a way to do it!

If the cost is less then a couple months' cost for data, I just might give it a try. This had been a strange, wet summer.

Lots of heat and even more rain due to thunder storms whish is why I lose power frequently.

I swear I can sit on my front porch and SEE the grass grow...

Yes sir. It had NEVER been this green and lush in August...

I have to mow my St. Augustine twice a week this time of year, I'm not complaining it looks awesome!

This last week, we've had so much rain - not flooding but the slow, steady, gentle drizzle - that the grass is growing faster than my youngest grandson. And he's heading for 6 feet tall at only 15 years old.
