Because the FE - even an completly locked .accde, it's possible to import linked tables (with defs) and queries to an another accdb - that's scares out the IT sec. department in my company... This is avoided using connections and 'hardcoded queries' approach.

Of course that doesn't prevent end users importing linked tables or queries

Personally, I have never see the need to check both.
If I open a recordset and it is at EOF, then it is empty.

I didn't say you needed it. I did say it was a known way of testing for an empty recordset and not a likely source of error in the indicated case.
