As I get further along on this thing and am ready to begin putting it out for testing we need to be able to have the user easily import all his data from the last version when I do an upgrade.
Yes, I know I can split the data out, but sometimes there will be a change to the tables that will require importing all the records (or almost all since some like 'help' will stay with the front end.

I'd think this would have to be as easy as pushing a button and having a 'browse' button to navigate to the file of the older version.

What are some of the methods to go about doing this?

If you have split your DB into FE/BE as recommended then you will find most upgrades only affect the FE which means the Data is unaffected. When there is a change to BE design then you can run updating queries to amend the data in the BE.

From experience I find that I have about 10 times more changes to the FE than to the BE.

If you look at Bob Larson's website you will find his utility for automatically upgrading the FE database. THe important thing is to make sure you only have static data in the FE.
