Very Specific Report Field

I have discovered the hard way that unless you put a control on your report that references a field, you can not reference that field. Once you do, then I'm pretty sure you can reference either the field or the control. I just put the control I don't want to see behind one I want to see.

I believe you have to surround the [FieldName] in brackets to reference it but it should not be an issue since there has to be a control bound to it anyway, just use the control name.
