I have a tbl w/ UserID, LName, FName, etc. When I try to use Find to find the last name "Whatever" for a particular record, it will NOT locate it, although it will locate the ID number and/or First name of that record. Not a typo on the last name either, so ????? All other records work fine, have had this happen before in another database with just one record. It isn't a duplicate record either. Any ideas?

Clarification, please! When you search for records using the Find operation:

1. You can find any record you want except one.

2. You can find any record you want if you search on a particular field but not if you search on another particular field.

3. You can find any record you want except one when searching only through a particular field.

Case 1: Attempt to repair and compact the DB

Case 2: Check the format of the field

Case 3: Find the record through other means. Retype the offending field in that record.

We figured it out! What had happened was someone typed in "Whatever and then several spaces (inadvertantly I hope) then Whatever" again. So it would be like Whatever Whatever. In the table you could NOT see the second Whatever, so you thought you had typed in the name correctly and if you searched for first or any part of the name you would find it, but if you searched for whole name it would not because it was looking for Whatever Whatever as the whole name, not just Whatever. Found that out by looking at the drop down list in our Find Person field, it had Whatever then below it, Whatever, John, and only for that one record. The rest of the records came up Smith, Joe and etc. So, if anyone else comes up with this problem, see if you have extra spaces you can't see after the last character in the title, or expand the field so all the text fits and you could see the erronous typing!

For what it's worth, I had a similar problem -- but in my case the user had spaces in FRONT of the item. It was hard to notice when in a form looking at one record at a time. But, was VERY noticeable when I looked at a report. So, in that case, a find '*whatever*' found it!
