Hello all
My name is Robbie Robinson. I am originally from Charleston, South Carolina, but am currently serving in the Peace Corps. So I am over in South America at the moment. got my undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and another in Mathematics. I am an ok programmer, my usual work centered around either C++ and html/php/mysql scripts, but I am a beginner at using Microsoft Access (every time I have a question about my database the google searches ALWAYS link me here lol).

24 years old, into Anime, Manga, all sorts of music, and helping people. nice to meet you all and I look forward to interacting with everyone in this community!

Welcome Robbie! My younger daughter recently returned from a Peace Corps stint in Kazakhstan. What country are you in down there?

Ah! did she like it? I am in Guyana.

She did, though she joked she probably didn't get the "true" Peace Corps experience, since her assignment was at a university, not out in a remote village. She was surprised to be sent there, since she was fluent in Spanish before she even applied. She assumed she'd be sent to a Spanish speaking country. She is very good with languages, and I think the Peace Corps picked up on that. She learned Russian and Kazakh before and during her time there.

yeeeah, the experience is definitely weird like that. The general perception of the peace corps volunteer by Americans is living in the woods, with no electricity, saving little foreign babies every day. I am definitely right outside the city, with a satellite on my roof (for internet access), and i drink expresso every morning. She learned Russian? that is impressive! I had experience in French and they sent me to an English/Creoles speaking S. American Country, and that happened with a lot of us.

Yes, she learned Russian (crazy, I know!). Now she's learning Nepalese, as she and her husband are living in Kathmandu, Nepal (for his job). She got a job as program director for a small organization that she says is like the Peace Corps, but only operates in Nepal. According to her, "for those familiar with the org structure of Peace Corps, my job is basically that of a recruiter combined with the duties of all the in-country staff, minus about 99% of the bureaucracy."

You're right about the general perception of the Peace Corps volunteer; or at least that's what mine was before she went.
