I presume whatever got him banned has been removed?

Since the posts that were being posted were pretty obviously an attempt to get to 10 posts so that a link in a signature could be placed, I did some checking and found that they had spammed at least one other site.

So as yet he did nothing - Punishment for what someone might do is a dangerous step surely?

Unless he continued to post a signature in a couple of old threads is harmless enough - or a waste of his time.

Anyway now we know.

You are definately on the ball Bob.

No, it is called PROACTIVELY preventing spam. There are behaviours which are pretty easy to identify and just because someone hasn't done it here, if they do it somewhere else, in the case of spam, it is going to happen here. The think you need to remember is that I get to see a lot of things as moderator that you all don't get to see. And couple that with the fact that I've been dealing with these slimebags for several years now, is one of the ways we keep spam from happening so much on this site. Now, if we only do things REACTIVELY then we will always be removing the spam and it gives no incentive to the spammers to care. But, as we have been removing spammers proactively the numbers of spammers actually posting spam on this site has dramatically DECREASED. Many of them don't even try now because they know that they will be removed very quickly and if one of us mods is on it can be even before they post. Which actually makes things much smoother now. We can now go for days without getting spammed whereas we were getting many over the course of hours.

I have to agree with Bob. He was an eventual spammer just itching to post some links. We get them all the time, but usually it's invisible to you guys because the posts are moderated.

Yeah, sort of like "We deal with the garbage so you don't have to" :)

Oh, and just to note - if I have any doubts whatsoever about someone I will NOT ban them immediately. It is only if I am completely satisfied, based on the evidence I see from the sources on the web, that I will proactively ban someone for spamming.

well good on yeah .. its a thankless job ..
(thanks)

Okay, am going to lock this thread now. The answers have been given and we are moving on and the moderators will continue to do the best job they can in keeping the site as "spam free" as possible. Thanks for your kind understanding (and if you don't well, that's unfortunate).
