Why is that so?

There was a "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" story several years ago about exactly such a case involving a male "escort" who was raped by three women, and the writers claimed (rightly or wrongly) that their stories are inspired by actual events.

Interesting tidbit: The episode was called 'Ridicule' (because of the reactions of most people who heard about the crime, including most of the cops), and one of those three women (who turned out to be the ringleader of the ra**) was played by Diane Neal, who went on to spend 6 years playing Assistant District Attorney Casey Novak on the very same show.
