Why won't my rows follow the info when I sort a column?

When I sort my column 'names' the rows which should be attached to it do not follow. They stay where they were. And Excel also does not allow me to go back or undo. I am VERY new to this and am working on a project for a small local non-profit that wants a program to track volunteer hours and print out reports at any time with totals for hours, days, weeks, months, averages, etc. and I am struggling.
 
Did you make sure that you selected ALL of the columns in the sheet. The simplest way to do this is to click on the top leftmost square abutting the column and row numbers, the whole sheet will now be selected, if you now click sort from the menu or ribbon , depending on your release you will be able to do a custom sort, selecting not only the column to sort on bu t whether you have a heading row or not.
