Will Flipper flip you off?

If they manage to do it, we could chat with them. And eventually all animals. They could look at body language too. Point your phone at the neighbours dog to find out if they are friend or foe.

We could promise fish to the dolphins in return for them to do tasks for us. Eventually, the dolphins will be doing a 9-5 like the rest of the planet.

What if the fish say "we don't want to be eaten by Dolphins"

...and...if they are able to communicate, would that make them more then simple sentient beings? Something between a brain and a soul? What then?

Don't know about corn feeling pain per se, but the "does vegetation know it is being harvested" question was asked years ago.

Plants DO react as a multi-part organism (i.e. reactions not isolated to just a single leaf). There is a type of mimosa that if you touch the end of a branch, all the leaves on that branch will react. There is a vine called the "telegraph vine" that has an extended runner and things done to one part of the plant can be electrically detected in other parts at some distance. Plants display different kinds of "tropism" (attraction to something.) Phototropism is well known in plants that "follow the sun". Thigmotropism (touch sensitivity) is well known. See the linked article above for more on that subject.
