Windows 7 and Access 97

Has anyone had any problems running Access 97 on Windows 7?

I have a client that just upgraded one of their machines to a 64 bit Windows 7 machine with 4 gigs of ram.

Overall, the machine runs great, but Access 97 seems to lock up and stop responding regularly.

I have tried XP compatibliblity mode and that made no difference. Access 97 does open and run, but when it comes to queries, it will often stop responding.

Any suggestions?

The XP compatibility mode should run fine, that's strange, since it's really just a virtual version of xp. Do they have a newer version of Access? You may run into problems converting, but with the limitations in Access 97, it might be worth it at this point if they insist on using such a new operating system. Software that is 14 years old just isn't designed to work with new operating systems...

That has to be something in your design of the database or something. Access 2007 works just fine on Windows 7.

Are you seeing this with just access or all office products? I am seeing it with all of em and What I end up having to do it kill my print spooler service and restart it and the applications wont hang... dont ask me why that works, but it does....

Also, what service pack level are you at with 2007?

As for the OP, XP Mode should work, but as with any real old software, if you need to use it, you really have to keep the old hardware too in order to guarantee it will work. If you have really old software and then upgrade to a much newer machine, then the software really needs to be upgraded as well.

Using 2010 now and its 64 bit.. thought it had something to do with win 7 64bit but now im not sure

2010 64 bit is still a bit shaky.

What Office 2007 Service Pack are you on?

Try stopping your print spooler service and see if it opens for you.

Bob, I have SP2 installed. Rainman, the stopping and restarting of the print spooler didn't seem to have any effect.

I know it was having problems prior to O2K7 SP1 but since then, I've run Access (SP2) on Win7 (64 bit) with no issues.

This is the 32 bit version. Could that be the problem?

Shouldn't be a problem either. I'm running 32 bit windows on my netbook and Access 2007 worked fine there too.

That shouldn't have an impact. Offce 2007 should work perfectly in Windows 7. It's worth a shot, but doubt it will fix your issue.

You can try that, but 2007 is new enough that it should work just fine on Windows 7. But, you probably have nothing to lose to give it a try.
