Hi All

I've Googled my problem and read a dozen of posts on this site but I still have not resolved my problem. Since there appear to be lots of people with the same issue maybe one of you kind people can help me go through this task by task.

I have split my Access Db into a Front End (FE) and Back End (BE), thanks to Rural Guy for helping out with that some months ago. The FE resides on my Desktop PC and the BE on my laptop. They are connected via cable through a router on my local network.

FE PC
-----
Access 2002 SP3
Windows XPPro SP2
IE7.0.5730.11

BE Laptop
---------
Access 2007
Windows XPPro
IE7.0.5730.11

When I try to link my FE to the tables on the BE, I get the all too familar:-

"The file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site" etc etc

Here's what I've checked so far.

1. Done A TRACERT to my make sure my Laptop (BE) is on my local network. It only took 1 hop so nothing's routed outside

2. Checked the IE Options (security) on my Desktop (FE) PC to verify that the IP address of my Laptop is in the Local Intranet zones.

3. Checked the IE Options (security) on my Desktop (FE) PC to verify that the IP address of my Laptop is in the Trusted Sites (both http and https)

4. Set the IE Options (security) on my Desktop (FE) PC for both Local Intranet and Trusted Sites to LOW.

5. Checked that from my FE Desktop I can read, write and modify (documents) on the Laptop share in which the BE resides.

6. Checked the Properties box for my BE .mdb to see if there is a UNBLOCK tick box. It does not have one.

7. Checked that EVERYONE has Full Control, Change and Read permissions on the BE folder and it's parent folder.

This error also happened when my Laptop only had Access 2002 too so I don;t think it's a mis-match of the Access versions.

Hmmm... I've run out of ideas now.

As always, any help gratefully accepted....

Thanks

Hi Golfer

Thanks very much for trying to assist with this problem.

I ignored all the stuff about bypassing proxy servers because I don't use one. And the section as below I've already done.
--------------------------------------------
Users
To work around this behavior, each user must add *.domain.com or the appropriate IP address range to the Local Intranet Sites dialog box: 1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
2. On the Security tab, click Local intranet, and then click Sites.
3. Click Advanced, and then type: *.domain.com or an IP address range (for example, 157.54.100-200.*) in the Add this Web site to the zone box, where domain.com is your company and top-level domain names.
4. Click Add, click OK, click OK, and then click OK again to close the Internet Options dialog box.
5. Restart the computer.

---------------------------------------------
I used 192.168.2.*

The Administrators advice I've not done since the workaround above should nulify it.

Alas, still no joy... I've been stuck with this for several weeks now.

Do I need IIS running on my BE machine or something, I wonder? At the moment, if I open a IE browser to the BE machine at http://192.168.2.2
I get the "Cannot display webpage" page. Does IIS serve the BE Db out or something? Is this why there's so many options to go thru' in IE settings?

Thanks

If you have not used your two free support calls to microsoft, I would suggest using one of them of this. After two or three days I normally give up and call microsoft. It's quicker and less painful than continuing to not have the thing fixed.

Hi

Thanks to the Golfer for his suggestions but I'm not sure I know how to raise such a call?

So, before I lose my grip on reality altogether, I wondered if anyone out there has ever successfully managed to share out an Access 2002 database from a Share on a LAN? I am beginning to think it is not possible since I found this in Microsoft kb/303650

" Also, some applications may not be able to open files by using an http:// address even if the Web site is on your LAN and you use the NetBIOS name (for example, http://server). For example, Microsoft Access 2002 cannot open files from http:// addresses. If you try to open an Access database file (.mdb) on an intranet Web site by using either the IP address, FQDN, or NetBIOS name, Access 2002 will incorrectly report that the file is outside your intranet or on an untrusted site by displaying the error message in the "Symptoms" section of this article. "

Well, if I can't map the BackEnd Db share with an IP address, FQDN or NetBIOS name, what on earth can I map it with?

My machine containing the FrontEnd Db, presently maps to the share containing the BackEnd Db with:-

\\192.168.2.2\shared network folder.

I can open other files on this share but if I navigate to it and click on the .MDB, I get the :-

"The file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site"

nonsense despite all my best efforts to add into my Internet sites..

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's managed to do this... thanks...

Well I never got to the bottom of why this happens. The only way I've got around it is to only open the FE database(s) with Access 2007. I just cannot get Access 2002 to open an Front End where the Back End Db is on a network!

Incidentally, I did not upgrade the actual Db to 2007, I simply open a 2002 Db with Access 2007. Why? Because my attempts to upgrade it caused all sorts of other problems...

Hope this helps someone out there struggling with the same problem.
