I am looking at using a Program to store User Names and Passwords securely.

From what I have read "KeePass" is looking good as I can host this on Dropbox.

This link is one of many I have looked at.

I am Running Windows 7 on one machine and Windows XP on another. My default browser is IE.

I would appreciate your thoughts if you have some experience with this or other similar program.

One password to store all your paswords online? Crazy stuff. Ever considered what would happen if they were infiltrated?

You could simply store the records in a password protected zip file. Check out 7zip.

Yes I agree.

The more I think of it I would be better off using Excel, Password Protected with a strong Password and then store that Workbook on a separate external device.

Thanks for your thoughts.

You can get pretty decent password 'safes' tbh cant actually think of one off the top of my head  as long as they use decent encryption and you stick to the usual rules you should be fine, hackers will go after the easy to break ones rather than the better protected.

A separate device is a good idea but on an Excel sheet? That actually very easy to crack as it doesn't use encryption, had a program (well macro actually) that did this straight away and yes it was used for a legit purpose.

I was going to say the same thing.

A separate device doen't help much while it is connected.

Take a look at TrueCrypt. It is a very good encryption solution but you should especially read the help section about how encrypted things can end up available unencrypted in the swap file. However don't mistake that for a weakness in Truecrypt. They just explain the stuff that other encryption programs don't.

It is harder than you think to keep something completely hidden from a competent hacker.

If you don't mind spending some cash on a solution then 1-Password is well worth a look. I've not tried the Windows version, but the Mac client is superb, can be distributed/synchronised via Dropbox and integrates into all the main web browsers.

Just for those who are interested.

I now store my Passwords on an Excel Sheet.

The sheet is Password protected.

The user names are recorded.

The Passwords themselves are hints rather than the actual password.

e.g. CatDog123 would be recorded as Cat. That is a good enough hint for me to remember the Full Password.

Not perfect but it works for me.

Thanks all for the input.
